Below are descriptions for the programs offered by NovakTalks – All programs can be tailored to meet your staff or volunteer needs. Sessions can be combined to meet the needs of multiple contingencies over a period of consecutive days. Sessions can also be repeated for different audiences or a combined audience.  Custom programs can also be developed.

Conduct board training workshops can be designed to be an extended program or part of an extended campus visit.

Back to Basics: Chapter Accountability Models | 1.5 - 2.0 hour session

This session will cover the basics of best practices in setting up standards board’s operations within chapters; including getting chapter to use the board, sanctioning, expanding the role of the board to be about education and adjudication. Additionally we can talk about optional interventions to access when addressing member behavior.

Risk and Harm Reduction Judicial Board Models | 2.0 - 2.5 hour session

Session for advanced dialogue with chapters about establishing prevention focused chapter accountability models. Interactive session will focus on three types of prevention:

  1. Primary Prevention is defined as focusing efforts on the root causes of misconduct in order to stop misconduct before it occurs. Primary efforts address the attitudes, behaviors, and environmental conditions that support, condone and lead to misconduct.
  2. Secondary Prevention is defined as focusing efforts on specific groups known to be at-risk for perpetrating acts of misconduct or those at risk of being victimized by acts of misconduct.
  3. Tertiary Prevention is defined as focusing efforts on decreasing the impact of misconduct on individuals and the campus community while increasing the accountability of those that violate laws, rules, policies and working to prevent reoccurrence of misconduct.

Assigning Sanctions that will change behaviors | 1.5 - 2.0 hour session

This program focuses on the goal of issuing sanction.  The process of sanctioning should be designed so that all parties feel they have gained something from the conduct process. This session will review 5 key aspects of sanctioning that will help boards support member’s efforts to change and minimize repeat violations within the chapter. 

Promoting Self Governance with Confidence: Training Standards Boards | 1.0 - 1.5 hour workshop

This program is focused on a train the trainer style session for student leaders who are challenged with developing sanctions that appropriately address chapter or individual behavior.  Additionally, the program focuses on creating conversations where the sanction becomes a step to behavior change, rather than just a pre-prescribed remedy.

Participants will be taught a sanctioning model which focuses on creating sanctions that help aid in behavior change. Additionally, the program provides techniques for utilizing the model in student conduct board trainings.

In this train the trainer session, participants will be taught a sanctioning model intended to truly change behavior, as well as techniques for utilizing the model in student conduct board trainings.

Effectively Sanctioning Hazing Violations | 1.0 - 1.5 hour workshop

The completion of adjudicating a hazing case often leaves us feeling as if there is little or no hope of creating long-term sustained change. We must recognize that the sanctions must be designed in accordance with the seriousness of the violation and the circumstances surrounding the conduct.

This is an interactive dialogue during which you will learn strategies for assigning sanctions that have a higher probability of both educating the organization and providing insight as to how the group can develop modified new member education efforts.

Again, Kim was very motivating and encouraging! She truly was the highlight of the whole conference for me. I learned that there are more effective methods to sanctioning and that I need to do a better job of collaborating with our judicial office.
